The trial of the wife of Werner Heyde, the Nazi “euthanasia doctor, ” on charges of receiving a pension under false pretenses proceeded yesterday against the background of new charges that the Schleswig-Holstein state was a sanctuary for former Nazis.
Mrs. Heyde was accused of collecting pension payments totaling 64,580 marks (about $16, 000) on her claim that her husband was missing when she knew, according to the charges, that he was living in the state, working as a psychiatric adviser under the name of Fritz Sawade. He is now in a Limburg jail, awaiting trial for the murder of several thousand mental patients and political prisoners during the Nazi period.
The renewed charges were made by Heinrich Kaeber, Social Democratic opposition leader in the Schleswig-Holstein Parliament, who said in Kiel that the Heyde-Sawade case was a “clear sign that the Adolf Eichmann trial concerns us very much. “
