A threefold expansion of ORT vocational schools in Israel by next year was urged here by Gen. Chaim Herzog. president of the Israeli branch of the international Organization for Rehabilitation through Training. Gen. Herzog spoke at a meeting of the executive committee of the World ORT Union.
He said that although 7.000 Israelis are graduated from ORT schools each year, that number is not enough to meet Israel’s needs for trained manpower. He said that ORT has signed an agreement with the Hebrew University in Jerusalem to organize and operate jointly a junior technical college that will prepare vocational high school graduates for higher education. In addition. be reported that two schools for Arabs would be opened in East Jerusalem on Sept. 1. ORT maintains three schools for Arab and Druze students elsewhere in Israel.
Max A. Braude, World ORT Union director-general, said the organization’s network of schools in 21 countries was growing in quality and in numbers of students. He said various ORT schools admitted 4,000 new students during the past few months. The executive committee adopted proposals to build a girl’s school in Bombay, India and a dormitory for girls from provincial areas in the ORT school in Teheran, Iran. Other proposals adopted called for the extension of technical training in computers, electronics and industrial chemistry and the improvement in ORT’s Latin American establishments. According to Daniel Mayer, chairman, the annual ORT budget was approaching $20 million.
