West German President Theodor Heuss personally bestowed the Grand Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic upon violinist Yehudi Menuhin today at a reception in the presidential residence.
Mr. Menuhin; whose Berlin debut as a thirteen-year-old in 1929 under Bruno Walter’s baton is still remembered in local musical circles, is popular here because he was one of the first Jewish artists to play for German audiences shortly after the war, often donating the proceeds of his concerts to charity.
