The first liberal arts college for women under Jewish sponsorship opened here today when the Stern College for Women, a division of Yeshiva University, began registration for its first class.
The school, named for Max Stern, prominent Jewish communal leader who gave $500,000 to help estalish it, will have an initial enrollment of 50 young women from seven states. Eventually, the school will have an enrollment of 500, Dr. Samuel Belkin, president of Yeshiva University, announced.
The college will offer courses leading to degrees of Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Religious Education and will prepare the young women for professional or communal life. The school has 25 classrooms, student lounges, an auditorium and other facilities and science laboratories are in the process of construction.
