The establishment of Israel “is a good omen for the free world, as well as for its striving for Justice and liberty everywhere,” Republican Presidential nominee Thomas E. Dewey said today in a message to the 51st annual convention of the Zionist Organization of America which opens here tomorrow.
The New York Governor’s message voiced the hope that “the truce will bring peace to the Holy Land and will secure the firm future existence of Israel” and warned that the struggle for the foundation of the Jewish state “is over by no means.” Praising the “courage, zeal and unflagging activities” of the Z.O.A., Gov. Dewey declared: “Much depends on what happens in the next four weeks. An enlightened people the world over will share your hopes for a favorable outcome.”
Messages to the convention were also received from C.I.O. and A.F. L. presidents Philip Murray and William Green, Brig. Gen. Sir Wyndham Deeds, who served as chief secretary of the Palestine Government from 1920-23, and other noted public figures. All of the messages pledged support to the Jewish state.
More than 2,000 delegates from 47 states and Hawaii are expected to attend the parley, at which a program of American Zionism’s future relationship to the Jewish state will be formulated.
