Samuel Bronstein, one of the leaders of the Ha’shomer Ha-zair, a Zionist youth organization in Russia, was shot by the guards in a Chiwa prison, because of his protest against ill-treatment.

Bronstein, who is a native of Odessa, was exiled to Usbekistan for his Zionist activities.
