ZIONISTS WHO CAME HERE FROM ZUPICH TO COMMEMORATE THE FORTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FIRST WORLD ZIONIST CONGRESS HEARD THEIR PRESIDENT. DR. CHAIM WEIZMANN, DECLARE TODAY THAT NOT BANKERS AND BARONS BUT POOR GHETTO JEWS HAD MADE ZIONISM VICTORIOUS.

THE DELEGATES TO THE TWENTIETH BIENNIAL ZIONIST CONGRESS INTERRUPTED THEIR DEBATE ON ACCEPTANCE OF PROPOSALS FOR A JEWISH STATE IN PALESTINE TO COME BY SPECIAL TRAIN TO BASEL WHERE, IN 1897, DR. THEODOR HERZL, FOUNDER OF POLITICAL ZIONISM, URGED THE NECESSITY FOR A JEWISH STATE.

THE FIRST ZIONIST CONGRESS WAS HELD HERE AUG. 24 TO 31, 1997. AMONG THE OTHER SPEAKERS AT A MEETING MARKING THE ANNIVERSARY WERE MENACHEM MENDEL USSISHKIN, WORLD PRESIDENT OF THE JEWISH NATIONAL FUND, AND RABBI MARCUS EHRENPREIS, CHIEF RABBI OF SWEDEN, BOTH OF WHOM WERE PRESENT AT THE FIRST CONGRESS.

EIGHT ZIONIST CONGRESSES BESIDES THE FIRST WERE HELD HERE — THE SECOND, THIRD, FIFTH, SIXTH, SEVENTH, TENTH, FIFTEENTH AND SEVENTEENTH.
