Texas was the first state to increase its quota in the $15,000,000 United Jewish Campaign. At the state conference held here yesterday a quota of $350,000 was accepted instead of the assigned sum of $250,000.
Herbert Marcus, of Dallas, was elected State Chairman. N. D. Naman of Houston, Gilbert Lang of San Antonio, and Adolph Schwarz of EI Paso, were chosen Vice-Chairmen. J. K. Hexter was chosen Treasurer, and Sidney P. Miller of Dallas, Secretary.
Three hundred and fifty delegates were present at the conference.
David A. Brown, National Chairman of the United Jewish Campaign, declared in his address that the greatest accomplishment of this campaign will be the revitalization which will come to American Jewry and enable it to cary out huge cominunal undertakings in the future. Mr. Brown laid emphasis on the conditions in Poland and the great need for immediate help there. He told of the great suffering of Jews in all parts of Europe and explained in detail the work of Russian colonization. He refuted the argument that the Jew would not work on the land, by giving the history of one million acres of land now under cultivation by Jews in the United States.
The delegates to the conference pledged to raise the quota for Texas within the next thirty days.
ORTHODOX BODY URGES SUPPORT FOR UNITED PALESTINE APPEAL
A call to Orthodox Jews to support the United Palestine Appeal was issued by Rabbi Meyer Berlin, President of the Mizrachi Organization of America and Rabbi B. L. Levinthal, Vice-President. The appeal was also signed by the other members of the Executive Committee. The Mizrachi organization consists of Orthodox rabbis and laymen.
“It was considered natural from the outset and clearly understood by the Mizrachi Organization as well as orthodox Jews generally that the United Palestine Appeal which embraces not only those two great funds, but also the health activities of Hadassah, and what is most important for the spiritual strengthening of our people the Mizrachi religious and cultural activities as well as the necessary means for assisting Mizrachi Chaluzim and Mizrachi colonization undertakings, merits full support and cooperation,” the appeal read. “It should be remembered in this connection that out of the direct funds of the Keren Hayesod, the Mizrachi schools in Palestine are assisted, schools which are religious in the best sense of the word and which are more and more taking the place of the general Zionist schools. Out of the same funds, also, assistance is given the religious colonies.”
AGUDAH LEADERS ARRIVE
Mr. Jacob Rosenheim, publisher of the German Jewish paper, “Der Israelit” in Frankfort, Germany, and Mr. Leo Wreschner. leaders of the Agudath Israel, the Orthodox Jewish world organization, arrived in New York on the steamer Albert Ballin on Sunday.
It is understood that the purpose of their visit to the United States is to assist in the collections of the Keren Ha’yishub, the Palestine fund of the Agudath Israel.
The College of Jewish Studies, an institution of higher Jewish learning, which was organized by the Jewish Education Committee of Chicago in January, 1925, opened registration for the Spring semester.
This College offers training for social workers, Sunday school, Congregational school and Hebrew school teachers, and club leaders.
