The Jewish Ministers’ Cantors’ Association closed its three-day convention here with a decision to expand its organization by establishing affiliated branches in all parts of the United States and Canada, with a strong centralized headquarters in New York.
Another innovation that provoked discussion is the decision to have synagogues seeking the services of cantors select applicants through the association instead of their dealing personally with individual cantors.
The convention also decided to launch a drive, starting June 15, for $100,000, to establish a seminary for the training of cantors. The seminary is to be housed in a proposed center to be erected by the association. The cantors also resolved that the association publish a monthly journal.
The association went on record as deploring the excesses in Roumania and pledging its support to the United Palestine Appeal.
A suggestion made by Rabbi Solomon Foster of Newark, when he addressed the convention at its opening session Sunday morning, was enthusiastically endorsed by the delegates. Rabbi Foster suggested that a committee from the association meet with committees from the Central Conference of American Rabbis and other rabbinical bodies to promote cooperation between rabbis and cantors.
