An Association to bring relief to needy Jewish scholars was founded here on the initiative of Dr. Pinczower and Dr. Lazarus Gold-schmidt. The name of the association is “Achieser.” The articles of the association describe the purpose as follows:
“In view of the great misery in which mental workers originating in East European countries are now living in Germany, the association, Achieser. aims to give assistance to needy Jewish scholars who have distinguished themselves by their work in the field of Jewish history and literature. The asociation will also seek to promote the publication of their works.”
Among the founders of the association are Israel Cohn-Reiss, Dr. Winkel, Dr. Galiner, Rabbi Mayer Hildesheimer, Dr. M. Pineff, and Engineer Schalit.
‘CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR’ OPPOSES LOWERING BARS
Advocating the maintenance of the present immigration restrictions, the “Christian Science Monitor” takes issue in an editorial with Edward C. Stokes former Governor of New Jersey, because of a recent speech in which he assailed the immigration laws as dangerous and destructive The paper writes:
“In their campaign for immigration law amendment the advocates of increased immigration have sought to gain support for their proposals by pointing out to owners of urban dwelling properties and vacant lots that a renewal of conditions under which 1,000,000 or more immigrants arrived annually would mean an increased demand for housing accommodations that would work to the profit of real estate owners. Here again, it may be questioned whether this argument is likely to gain any substantial support for the anti-restriction movement.”
A petition for permission to form a corporation called the “American Antl-Bible Suciety, organized to discredit the Bible as the word of God.” was presented yesterday to Supreme Court Justice Crain.
The business of the society as expressed in the corporation papers will be to print and distribute anti-biblical literature, hold meetings and debates on the subject of the Bible and agltate for a repeal of laws enforcing its religious teaching.
Charles Recht of 110 West Fortieth Street, counsel for the corporation, said that the society was started by a group of men who doubt the authenticity of the Bible as divine teaching and who may or may not believe in God and the divine origin of man.
The Board of Directors of the society is as follows : James I Elliott. O. H. Beiley. H. Peahody Flagg, Waldemar Mortensen. Dr. Max Isenberg. Dr. Theodore A. Lehmann and Louis A. Reltmelster.
