A wealthy Catholic merchant of Volke Topolcany purchased to the surprise of the Jewish population of the town, a pew in the great Orthodox synagogue of the city, which was sold at auction.
This action was taken by the Kehilah following an order of the Court issued against the pew holder, a prominent Jewish merchant of the city, in default of his payment of the Kehillah taxes. The other members of the Jewish community abstained from coming to the auction sale, because they disagreed with the procedure of the Kehillah board in selling the pew, contending that the merchant had other property which could have been turned into cash.
The Jewish community of Volke Topolcany is now curiously looking forward to seeing what the Catholic merchant will do with his acquisition in the synagogue.
