A Jewish immigrant aid conference, participated in by South American Jewish societies extending aid to immigrant families, was opened here on Sunday. A large number of delegates from this city and the provinces, as well as representatives of various institutions in South America, were in attendance.
Aaron Benjamin, who is on a mission here, greeted the delegates in behalf of the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society of America, Louis Oungre for the Jewish Colonization Association, and Rabbi Raffalovich for the Jewish community in Brazil, who are surveying conditions in South America on behalf of the Hicem, the combination of the Ica, Hias and Emigdirekt.
M. Regalsky in an exhaustive report submitted to the conference depicted the need of Jewish emigrant aid work as a national service. Conditions among East European Jewry are such that the need for emigration is urgent.
The American Scientific Committee of the Hebrew University in Palestine will give a dinner at the City Club tonight, at which various phases of scientific work, now being carried on at the University, will be discussed.
The speakers include Dr. Leo Wolman of the New School for Social Research, who will discuss the relation of the Hebrew University to the development of Palestine. Dr. K. G. Falk of the Harriman Research Laboratory will speak on “Scientific Work at the University,” F. Julius Fohs, oil geologist, on “Earthquakes in Palestine,” and Alfred E. Kornfeld, recently returned from a visit to Palestine, who will speak on University developments. Dr. Solomon Lowenstein of the American Advisory Committee will preside.
