Sholom Asch, American Jewish novelist, was the guest of honor at a banquet given by the Polish P. E. N. Club at the Hotel Europea. The gathering, which was the first occasion when the Yiddish and Polish writers #### was presided over by Kaden Bandrowski, well known Polish writer.
Among those present were the well known Polish writers Sieroszewski. Gettel and Lechon. The toastmaster introduced the guest of the evening, Mr. Asch, as “the great Jewish poet, honorary member of the world P. E. N. Club.” Mr. Asch in reply to the toast, stated that better relations between Poles and Jews will result from a better understanding of Yiddish literature on the part of Poles. “What we ask is not love, but understanding of Jewish ideals, which is possible through an acquaintance with Jewish literature. When Poland was deprived of its independence. Poland’s spirit lived in Polish literature. The Jews, having no state, perpetuate their ideal in their literature.”
