Rosenwald Gift Inspires Greater Effort for College

The gift of $500,000 by Julius Rosenwald to the Hebrew Union College of this city is praised by the “American Israelite” in its current issue.

“Aside from the conditions which he makes, conditions which are eminently fair and will inspire greater effort for the institution, his tender of this vast sum is a matter of the utmost importance to the institution and the cause for which it stands,” the paper writes. “The College is obligated to Jewish education in this country and this generation and to the furtherance through that form of endeavor of the cause of Israel for all countries and for posterity. The gift of Mr. Rosenwald is a substantial and inspiring recognition of the validity of this program.

“The fact that this tender of financial and personal support was made should awaken in men and women throughout the country a realization of the momentous undertaking which lies ready to their hands. If Mr. Rosenwald’s money and endorsement should go by default the Alumni of the College, its army of supporters throughout America and the lay leaders of American Judaism will have lost a vital opportunity. We are convinced that such will not be the case. We feel that every man and woman connected with Judaism as a religion in America will be willing and anxious to concentrate on this important work and to insure for the Hebrew Union College a sufficient endowment to carry on its necessary work and a sufficient endorsement to assure its well-earned influence.”
