The Jewish community of Sydney welcomed the announcement of the New Year Honors List, delayed through the illness of King George, which included Knighthood for Daniel Levy of this city, repeatedly elected Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of the State of New South Wales.
Like the late Dr. Joseph Jacobs of New York, Sir Daniel was one of the most brilliant graduates of the University of Sydney, in the Senate of which he now sits. Like his predecessor in the Speakership, the Hon. John Jacob Cohne, now senior Judge of the State District Courts, he has always taken active interest in Jewish affairs; he attended at the Great Synagogue here last Sabbath, the day after the official intimation of his Knighthood, in order to receive the traditional “call to the Torah.”
Some years ago, while Judge Cohen was still Speaker, and Sir Daniel Levy then Deputy Speaker, the Legislative Assembly adjourned on the Day of Atonement, because the desire of both its chairmen to observe that day was known and respected throughout the State Parliament House.
Miss Gladys Hope Marks, B.A., has been appointed Acting Professor of French in the University of Sydney, and is the first woman to take up professorial duties in an Australian university.
