The Ica had to over come great difficulties in order to be able to create a Jewish school system in Brazil, the Ica headquarters here state in reporting the successful conclusion of the teachers’ vacation courses which have been held in Rio de Janeiro under the direction of Rabbi Raffalovitch, the Ica representative in Brazil. The number of Jewish schools now amounting to 23, the statement says, is constantly being extended and improved. The organizers of the schools had from the outset to face two great problem-the enrollment of teachers and the unification of methods.
The vacation courses have been a big step in the direction of solving these questions. Thirty teachers have been attending the courses; twenty are already in charge of schools, and the remaining ten are desirous of being appointed as teachers. The Ica intended engaing teachers in Europe if necessary and has already engaged five such teachers. The teachers who are now being engaged on the spot are, however, well able to instruct the children of the Jewish immigrants who have recently arrived in Brazil.
Twelve schools subsidized by the Ica sent some of their teachers to attend the vacation courses. The schools provided only the travelling costs and the entire expenses in Rio were covered by the Ica. The expenses were rather considerable, although willing and generous help in the arrangements was given by everybody. Seventeen teachers were accommodated in the Jewish school building in Rio and 27 persons were provided at the school with meals. The courses organized by the Ica representative consisted of 58 sessions of which 22 were given by Professors of the University of Rio and by Rabbi Raffalovitch. These first pedagogic courses organized by the Ica will remain a land-mark in the history of the Jewish elementary schools in Brazil.
Dedication exercises of the newly completed building of Unity Synagogue, New York, will take place on Friday evening, April 12th. The ceremonies will be concluded with a banquet, Sunday evening, April 14th, at the Hotel Commodore.
The anditorium of the new building seats one thousand persons, and is surmounted by a large done. A small memorial chapel on the balcony floor is used for daly services. The religious school rooms can accommodate four hundred children.
