Victor Chenkin, noted diseur, who was greeted by New York critics and the public when he made his first appearance in New York last year, was welcomed back when he presented the first of eight recitals on Sunday night. Mr. Chenkin gave a program of songs including Russian, French, Italian, Ukrainian and Jewish.

Mr. Chenkin’s Jewish songs were received by the audience with the greatest enthusiasm, being master-pieces of characterization, ranging from the fiery intonings of a Chassidic rabbi to the gossiping of an old man.

Jacob Epstein, president of the American Wholesale Corporation, Baltimore, announced the merger of that business with Butler Brothers, of Chicago, to become effective January 1. The merged companies will result in the largest wholesale general merchandise organization in the United States, Mr. Epstein said.

In 1881, when 17 years old, Mr. Epstein opened a notion store in Baltimore with a capital of about $600.
