American women Zionists are gathered here for the opening today of the fifteenth annual convention of Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America, in the Hotel Ambassador. Three hundred members of Hadassah are expected to register as delegates, representing 40,000 American Jewish women in thirty-six states. Sessions will continue until Sunday.
As the first Zionist convention in America since the recent disturbances in Palestine, it is attracting wide attention among American Jews. Representatives will attend from a number of other women’s organizations.
“This convention will undoubtedly be one of the most vital Hadassah has ever had,” said Mrs. Robert Szold, acting national president. “It is of special significance, occurring as it does since the recent riots in Palestine and during a period of revival and reconstruction there. The health of the people of Palestine has suffered much because of deprivations and abnormal living conditions during and since the riots. Hadassah conducts the largest public health agency in Palestine, and as such its responsibilities have greatly increased. Preventive care among infants and children is of primary importance. We hope during the coming year to enlist the active interest of thousands of American women in our medical and health work in Palestine, which we conduct alike for all creeds.”
Preliminary meetings were held yesterday. A regional institute took place in the afternoon and a national board meeting at night. The members of the national board gave a dinner to the delegates attending the Conference of Jewish Women’s Organizations, being held in this city.
The convention speakers will be Mrs. Robert Szold, acting national president; Miss Henrietta Szold, dean of American women Zionists and founder of Hadassah; Mrs. Rebekah Kohut, author, Mrs. Rose Halprin, who spent six months in Palestine, and Dr. Nathan Ratnoff, chairman of American Jewish Physicians Committee. Mrs. Felix Warburg will be a guest of the convention.
Reports will be given on all branches of Hadassah public health work in Palestine and fund-raising and cultural activities in America. Decisions will be made on proposals for expansion in certain phases of the work and budgets for all funds will be determined.
Mrs. Samuel Shile, president of the Atlantic City chapter of Hadassah, will welcome the delegates.
