Norman Bentwich, as attorney-general, ordered a change in the decision of the examining judge who summoned three Jews to court under article 174 of the criminal code. Bentwich changed their position by ordering them summoned under article 170. The latter makes them liable to a first degree murder charge while article 174 limits them to a minor charge. All three are charged with the murder of an Arab at Bait-vegan, a suburb of Jerusalem, which was destroyed during the riots.
