A plague of rats has destroyed ninety percent of the unusually good crops in the Jewish colonies of the Emek, especially in the Nahalal and Afuleh bloc. The colonists say that the methods of the government agricultural department are ineffective, owing to a refusal to permit the colonists to employ the most drastic measures, the government fearing that the rodents would infest the wells from which the Arabs draw their water supply.
The Jewish Agency estimates that it will be necessary to appropriate $150,000 to rid the Emek of this latest plague. Some $50,000 has already been allocated for this purpose.
