A direct railroad connection between Egypt and British India by way of Haifa, the rapidly growing port of Palestine, will shortly be built, according to a trustworthy Egyptian source. This connection, which will realize a 30-year old British dream, will result from the construction of the Syrian-Trans-desert-Haifa-Bagdad railroad which will link up with the British controlled Port Fuad-India line via Persia and Iraq.
One line will run from the Indian-Persian frontier to the Persian-Iraqian frontier which will meet another line running to Haifa from Bagdad, thus extending the existing line from Haifa to El Kantara, at the southern end of the Suez Canal, to Port Fuad in India. It is reported that the Persian government and Ibn Saud have already agreed to the lines passing through their territory while Iraq is naturally delighted at the prospect.
The Egyptian Nationalists, however, are said to be betraying misgivings at the project for perfecting this railway network from Egypt to India because they fear it may lead to Great Britain annexing the Sinai Desert to Palestine to satisfy alleged Zionist ambitions. The Jewish Telegraphic Agency is semi-officially informed that while this railway scheme is not likely to be realized immediately such a linking in the future is easily conceivable.
