Alfred K. Foreman, president of the Jewish Charities of Chicago, has joined with D. F. Kelly, president of the Catholic Charities of Chicago, and Joel Hunter, general superintendent of the United Charities of Chicago, in asking that the Northwestern-Notre Dame football game scheduled for Nov. 22 at Northwestern’s stadium in Evanston be played instead at Soldiers’ Field in Grant Park, Chicago, and the proceeds be turned over to these three charities. Acceptance of this plan will mean the collection of a fund ranging from $150,000 to $250,000 for the three charities, it is estimated by sponsors of the plan.
Soldiers’ Field with its capacity of 110,000 persons can seat 60,000 more than would be able to attend if the game was held in Dyche Stadium at Northwestern. Coach Knute Rockne of Notre Dame declared he had no objections to the proposed change and thought it would be a splendid opportunity to raise much needed funds.
President Walter Dill Scott of Northwestern yesterday announced that he was in favor of the plan and that he had called a special meeting of the Board of Directors to consider the scheme. Eighteen of the 24 trustees available expressed themselves in accord with the plan.
In their letter urging this move, the heads of the three charities said that “the need of funds to meet the unemployment situation never has been as great in Chicago as it is now”.
