The annual report of the German Jewish Center of New York City, which has just been issued, reveals the work which this young organization has been doing for the spiritual and physical welfare of Jewish immigrants who have recently arrived in this country from Germany. The report also reveals that the Center has been aiding Jews in Germany itself who because of the Hitler victory in the recent political election are in critical circumstances.
The religious and social activities of the Center are under the direction of the founder of the organization, Rabbi Max Malina, who obtained his rabbinical education in the Lehranstalt fuer die Wissenschaft des Juedentums in Berlin. Julius J. Sichel, president of the organization, is also a graduate of a German university.
Through the interest of Rabbi Jonah B. Wise in the work of the Center, all the activities of the organization are held either in the Chapel of the Central Synagogue or in the Community House of that congregation. Julius Loeb, a trustee of this synagogue, has been particularly interested in the work. In appreciation of their efforts in its behalf, the Center recently elected Rabbi Wise and Mr. Loeb honorary members.
