To forestall the threatened strike of motor and bus operators throughout Palestine scheduled to begin August 1, the Palestine government today informed the union of bus owners and drivers that the secretary of state for the Colonies had been requested telegraphically to approve proposals for relief of the Palestine transportation industry, including remission of taxes. The recommendation to the secretary of state was made at a meeting of the executive council this morning.
The strike was originally supposed to begin on July 1 but the bus operators and chauffeurs agreed to postpone the stoppage for a month when the government agreed to utilize the intervening period to consider the bus men’s demands and to put off the imposition of the high license fees.
The strike had been called as a protest against high import duties on gasoline and automobile accessories, stiff license fees and other excessive taxes. When and if the strike goes into effect all motor transportation in Palestine will be halted and some 4,000 Jewish and Arab families will be affected.
