Cunliffe-lister Says Growing Appreciation Between Jews and Arabs in Palestine

Palestine is very fortunate in her High Commissioner and Sir Arthur Grenfell Wauchope has the complete confidence of both the Jews and the Arabs, having been described as a “second Lord Plumer,” the highest tribute those who have lived long in Palestine could pay, declared Sir Philip Cunliffe-Lister, secretary for the colonies in the MacDonald government, during a conversation with A. J. Freiman, president of the Zionist Organization of Canada.

Sir Philip is a member of the British delegation to the Imperial Economic Conference now being held at Ottawa. Sir Philip had a long talk with Mr. Freiman about economic developments in Palestine. He drew attention to the remarkable stability which Palestine has been able to maintain at a time of grave industrial and agricultural depression throughout the world.

He also stated that he had learned with interest from Nahum Sokolow of a number of instances of men with adequate capital and practical experience settling in Palestine and establishing industries there. A movement of this kind was at once a tribute to the stability of conditions in Palestine and a source of strength to the country. He remarked with satisfaction on the growing appreciation in Palestine of the community of interest between Jews and Arabs, both of whom were equally interested in the economic development of the country.

In the successful and harmonious carrying out of policy so much must depend on the man on the spot, the minister added, referring in the abovementioned terms to the present incumbent, Sir Arthur Grenfell Wauchope. Mr. Freiman told the minister that he had heard with pleasure the same appreciation of the High Commissioner.
