American Jewry was urged to give its support to President Roosevelt and his advisers in their efforts to bring about a full recovery in the United States, in a New Year’s message issued by Louis J. Moss, of Brooklyn, president of the United Synagogue of America.
At the same time Mr. Moss deplored the tragic situation in which the Jews of Germany find themselves and called for the giving of all possible aid and assistance to the distressed Jews of Germany.
“The condition of our German coreligionists is beyond description,” Mr. Moss stated. “A peaceful, patriotic minority has been singled out and made to bear the brunt of a studied and ruthless attack upon its very existence.
“It seems as if that nation has gone mad, for how else can one explain the cruelties devised for the humiliation and suffering of this religious group?
“Our duty is plain. We must render whatever financial aid and assistance we can to the stricken of our faith in Germany and fervently pray for an early turn in the tide of events.”
