“But while business dies the Jew is not released from his duties to the State. Rent, rates taxes remain at the same level for the Jewish doctor or lawyer. Provincial Jews sell their homes for a tenth of the value, and migrate to the obscurity of the towns in the hope that fortune will change.

“German Jews are living on their capital, but savings will soon be exhausted—Jewish charity organizations have little money left—and then the real tragedy will begin.

“Hitherto the number of deaths by suicide and violence has not been large, but with each month distress and poverty grows.

“There is a new boom in Jew-baiting. Licensed thieves break into Jewish homes, despoil the property of Jews, desecrate their fathers’ graves. Official bullies inform Jewish citizens ‘The best thing you can do is die!'”
