No slightest infringement of the constitutional rights of Jewish citizens of the free city of Danzig will be tolerated, Dr. Hermann Rauschning, president of the Danzig Senate, asserted today in an official communication to the press.
Dr. Rauschning’s declaration against racial prejudices came in answer to questions asked editorially by the Jewish newspaper, the Danziger Echo, which demanded reassurance that Danzig, in which Nazi sway is firmly intrenched, will give no official sanction to anti-Semitism.
The Senate president pointed out that Danzig’s constitution is particularly specific in the matter of economic freedom, and added that the city government will countenance no attempts at organized boycotts against Jewish merchants or professional men. The Senate, he said, will leave no stone unturned to enforce observance of the rights of Danzig’s Jewish residents. Punishment will be meted out to those who ignore them, he told the press.
