Led by the Housewives’ League, a number of Jewish women’s organizations in this city is waging a campaign against an increase in the price of Jewish bread. Members of these organizations have been urged to bake their own bread until the one – cent – per – pound increase is withdrawn.
The increase in the price of both bread and rolls, according to the Jewish bakers, has been necessitated by the increase in the cost of ingredients and by a rise in labor costs following the adoption of the NRA code. It was explained by the bakers that all Jewish bread is made by hand, which requires a larger labor outlay than does bread made and baked by machinery.
