Early in February Brundage championed the right of American athletes to enter the Berlin Olympics after receiving a communication from “a reliable source” in Germany assuring him there was no discrimination against Jewish athletes. In this he was opposed by Charles L. Ornstein, a member of the committee, who protested that Germany was unrelenting in its treatment of Jews and that until better sportsmanship is shown American athletes should not take part in any event in the Berlin Olympics.
Prior to this the committee adopted a resolution at its Washington convention protesting Germany’s treatment of Jewish athletes and threatening non-participation in the Olympics unless conditions are remedied.
