A League of Free Germans to “stem the tide of Hitlerism and Fascism among the Germans of the United States and to fight the Nazi menace to the bitter end” has been organized here in New York, it was announced yesterday.
The new organization, which is non-partisan, aims to unite all Germans in the United States opposed to Nazi domination, regardless of political and other affiliations.
Although the new group appeals to all German-speaking elements, its main efforts will be directed toward building up a nation-wide movement of Germans and German descendants in defense of liberty and democracy.
Martin Plettl, well known German labor leader and a refugee from Nazi Germany, is the president of the new organization. Mr. Plettl, head of the German clothing workers’ union, was jailed by the Nazis, but succeeded in escaping from Germany.
A number of units have already been organized in and around New York, it was announced. New branches in the United States, Canada and Latin America are in process of formation. A congress of delegates of all branches will be held in the near future, it was said at the headquarters of the league.
