A Jew had to be elected New York’s next President of the Board of Aldermen as the candidates for the office on the three major tickets were all Jews. The Democratic candidate was Maldwin W. Fertig, former counsel to Governor Lehman; the Fusion candidate was Bernard S. Deutsch, president of the American Jewish Congress; and the Recovery candidate was Nathan Straus Jr., former State Senator and active Zionist.
