The Metropolitan chapter of the American Association of Teachers of German succeeded yesterday in frustrating, for the time being, at least, an attempt to place a publication containing “open pro-Hitler propaganda” on the approved textbook list of New York City schools.
The publication is Das Deutsche Echo, a ten-page leaflet edited and printed in Germany and distributed in the United States by B. Westermann and Company, Inc., 13 West Forty-sixth street.
It had been given tentative approval by District Superintendent Herman Wright when the German teachers’ organization, of which Dr. J. B. A. Jonas is president, adopted a resolution of condemnation.
This action resulted after an investigation had been made of the contents of the paper, submitted for approval this year for the first time, although it had been distributed in the high schools for a number of years, by Associate Superintendents John L. Tildsley and John S. Roberts.
