Schabad Dead in Wilno at 71; Ill Few Weeks

Dr. Zemach Schabad, one of the most prominent Jewish leaders in Poland and moving spirit of the Yiddish Scientific Institute in Wilno, died at his home there yesterday at the age of 71.

Dr. Schabad underwent an operation several weeks ago, whe## one of his legs was amputated. Since the operation his state of health became worse daily, and the doctors attending him gave up a### hope for his recovery.

Funeral services will be held today. They will be conducted at the expense of the Jewish community, as a mark of appreciation of Dr. Schabad’s devotion to various Jewish organizations.

Relatives of the scientist today received numerous messages of condolence from all over the country and from abroad. All Jewish organizations in Wilno have appointed special delegations to be represented at the funeral. A special session was held by the Jewish community of Wilno.

Dr. Schabad played an important role not only among the Jews of Poland, but also among Russian Jewry before Poland became an independent republic. He was arrested by the Czarist government in Russia in 1905. In 1928 he was a member of the Polish Senate.

Dr. Schabad was the author of many works in medicine and was one of the founders of the Association to Preserve Health Among Jews (OZE).

The Independent Order of B’rith Abraham, 37 East Seventh street, has decided to organize a singing society, it was disclosed yesterday.

Pincus Jassinowsky, composer, will lead the society.
