An explanation as to why no united campaign for German and Polish Jewry is instituted in England was given here today by Lady Erleigh, chairman of the third appeal for funds which is to be launched by the Central British Fund for German Jews on Sunday, March 10.
“It was found to be impracticable to make a joint appeal for both German and Polish Jews. The situation with regard to Germany is more political and with Poland more economic. The two appeals will not overlap,” Lady Erleigh stated.
“I have seen the horrible conditions under which the Jews live in Poland,” Lady Erleigh continued. “We do not want to get in the way of people who want to raise money, and we have come to the conclusion that it is better to keep the appeals apart. We must do our best to keep them apart. We have a number of German Jews training in different countries. If they continue training this year, we can place them in positions. It is better to finish one thing before embarking upon another. We must do our best to liquidate the German situation.”
Leonard Montefiore, the other chairman of the appeal, declared that many have felt that the German situation was a situation by itself, while the Polish situation in its misery is linked up with the general situation. When the German fund has been completed, the Polish fund will begin, he said, adding that there is no question of rivalry, but only friendliness between the two campaigns.
The launching of the united appeal for Polish Jewry is scheduled for March 29.
