realistic index of the inhuman policy adopted by the German government toward the 600,000 German Jews, natives of the land, who only yesterday enjoyed equal civil, economic and political rights. In the Germany of today, the extermination of the members of a race, regardless of political views or religious belief, may be advocated by governmental agencies of propaganda. Government-protected bodies may with impunity trample under foot, without the slightest respect and without hindrance by government, all those rights that are regarded in Western lands as fundamental in a civilized community and for which whole generations in various lands fought and died. Pogroms are the inevitable consequence of such a reactionary policy.
“Under these circumstances, it seems to us that the American government, which indicates a deep and sincere interest in the maintenance of peace as between Italy and Abyssinia, which is still assumed to be concerned with the preservation of fundamental rights, no matter where and by whom they may be violated, may, with all respect and due deference, be called upon to make representations to the German government in what seems to us, as well as to a large mass of American citizens, a state of affairs which has been suffered without rebuke now for about three years, and which demands redress.”
