For suggesting that if Winter comes Spring cannot be far behind, last week’s issue of the Juedische Rundschau, German Zionist organ, was confiscated by the Government, it became known today when this week’s issue appeared.
In an editorial entitled “Autumn Reflections,” the newspaper described in glowing terms the Jewish home as the last refuge of the Jews in Germany. “We are not to be blamed if our neighbor passes false judgment against us,” the article said. “We cannot change the world outside us, but we can change our own world by cultivating everything that is beautiful.
“Outside the storms rage as if they wished to destroy everything. But unseen to our eyes there shoots in the depth of the earth new life, and Spring follows Winter. Cannot we see the same happening again and again in our history? Does not a time of blossoming follow each epoch of decline? Jewry understands the lessons of nature. Our way leads, in spite of all obstacles, upwards. Providence and history are our leaders.”
The editorial continued:
“Outside cold winds blow. Let us take refuge in the modest Jewish home, where warmth awaits us. We cannot change the fact that our children are regarded as aliens in the state schools. Let us send them to schools where they will be able to consider their Jewishness with pride and not with shame. We cannot prevent the ruin of Jewish existence, but we can try to show our human sympathy and do all we can to help them.
“There is no sense covering up our bitter reality, but it is not necessary to paint it black. Our lot is heavy but our forefathers went through worse experiences.”
