The Government announced today a new labor immigration for the next six months providing for issuance of 4,500 immigration certificates to Jews.

With Arabs striking against Jewish immigration, the schedule was made public in a special edition of the Official Gazette.

The Government reserved 500 of the certificates for possible illegal immigrants. The remainder will be turned over to the Jewish Agency for Palestine to be allotted equally to married laborers, bachelors and spinsters. Of the total number, 1,200 will be earmarked for use of German Jewish refugees.

Announcement of the schedule was regarded as the British Government’s emphatic answer to Arab demands for complete stoppage of Jewish immigration. A reliable source said that the Government had issued the schedule at this time on direct orders from J.H. Thomas, British Colonial Secretary.
