Warning that Fascist anti-Jewish propaganda if allowed to continue unchecked will lead to pogrom in England was voiced in the House of Commons today by D. N. Pritt, laborite.
Mr. Pritt, speaking during a debate on the Home Office estimates. sharply criticized the police for permitting Fascist violence and attacks against Jews.
Citing several instances of recent anti-Jewish attacks, he read from the Imperial Fascist League organ “ritual murder” charges published therein and warned that such allegations will lead to pogroms unless curbed by the Government. He accused the police of laxity in dealing with Fascist Jew-baiters.
Duchess Atholl, referring to the activities of the so-called National Workers’ Party, founded by Seton Hutchinson, warned that the anti-Jewish utterances of this party tend to create prejudice that may lead to violence.
East End Jews are living in a state of terror as a result of Fascist intimidation, George Lansbury, Laborite, declared, warning of an outburst of “terrible reprisals” unless Fascist incitement is checked.
Sir John Simon, Home Secretary, replying to the charges and warnings, defended the police but expressed concern at the developments.
Also defending the police against charges of bias, Capt. J.R.J. Macnamara, Conservative, condemned Jew-baiting but warned against restraining the right of free speech.
