London Papers Hit British Mandate

The Sunday Observer, warning that Palestine “disorder cannot be repressed by force alone,” demanded in an editorial today the reform of the British mandate over the Holy Land.

“It is not Great Britain’s business to take Palestine from the Arabs and give it to the Jews,” the editorial said. “We pledged to safeguard Arab rights. Our only want is to restrict the Jews and prevent their preponderance in Palestine.”

Lord Beaverbrook, prominent publisher, in an article in the Sunday Express, assailed Great Britain’s retention of the League of Nations mandate as “an example of foreign interference with Britain’s political business.”

He demanded surrender of the mandate “while there is yet time,” adding that Britain does not stand to gain anything from Palestine, either commercially or for imperial defense.
