Jewish Papers in Reich Forbidden to Quote from German Works

SIGN UP FOR THE JTA DAILY BRIEFING

JEWISH NEWSPAPERS IN GERMANY HAVE BEEN FORBIDDEN TO QUOTE FROM GERMAN NEWSPAPERS, PERIODICALS AND BOOKS, AS PART OF THE CAMPAIGN TO ISOLATE THE JEWS FROM GERMAN LIFE.

THE ORDER WAS ONE OF SEVERAL NEW “VERBOTENS” PRESCRIBED BY HANS HINKEL, REICH DIRECTOR OF “NON-ARYAN” CULTURE, AS REPRODUCED IN THE PARISER TAGESZEITUNG. IT WAS HINKEL WHO RECENTLY FORBADE JEWS TO PERFORM THE WORKS OF BEETHOVEN, MOZART AND GOETHE.

THE NEW INSTRUCTIONS INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:

1. IT IS FORBIDDEN TO TAKE A CRITICAL ATTITUDE TOWARD ITALY’S COLONIAL POLICIES.

2. IT IS FORBIDDEN TO CRITICIZE THE POLISH GOVERNMENT OR ANY STEPS IT TAKES.

3. IT IS FORBIDDEN TO CITE OR QUOTE FROM GERMAN NEWSPAPERS, PERIODICALS AND BOOKS.

THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR PROTECTION OF POLISH AND ITALIAN ACTIONS FROM CRITICISM, ACCORDING TO THE TAGESZEITUNG, ARE IN LINE WITH THE GENERAL POLICY OF DR. JOSEF GOEBBELS, REICH MINISTER OF PROPAGANDA AND ENLIGHTENMENT.

THE BAN ON QUOTING REFERS NOT ONLY TO CITATIONS FROM GERMAN LITERATURE WITHOUT PERMISSION, BUT EXTENDS AS WELL TO PUBLICATIONS OF LAWS, ORDINANCES, JUDGMENTS OR DECISIONS THAT REFER IN ANY WAY TO THE JEWS IN GERMANY.

IT IS APPARENTLY THE RESULT OF THE JEWISH NEWSPAPERS’ CUSTOM OF REFRAINING FROM ALL EDITORIAL COMMENT, BUT QUOTING FROM THOROUGHLY SAFE GERMAN SOURCES, SOMETIMES TO THE EMBARRASSMENT OF THE REGIME. IT IS CLEAR, THE TAGESZEITUNG REMARKED, THAT THE LACK OF INDEPENDENT COMMENTING IN JEWISH PAPERS ON LIFE IN GERMANY IS VERY UNCOMFORTABLE FOR THE NAZIS. SINCE THEY DO NOT WANT TO PERMIT SUCH COMMENT, THEY NOW WISH TO SUPPRESS THE QUOTING.
