Mayor of Panciu Aided Pogromists, Bucharest Hears

CHARGES THAT MAYOR JOSEF SOICA AIDED ANTI-JEWISH RIOTERS IN THE TOWN OF PANCIU LAST SUNDAY, EVEN TO PROVIDING A BRASS BAND FOR THEM, WERE LODGED HERE TODAY.

THE MAYOR SENT THE POLICE CHIEF OUT OF TOWN BEFORE THE DISORDERS, WHICH ACCOMPANIED THE MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS, THE CHARGES SAID, AND HE ARRANGED THE ATTACKS IN ORDER TO PREVENT THE JEWS FROM VOTING.

ACCORDING TO THE REPORT, THE BAND PLAYED THROUGHOUT THE DISORDERS. ALL JEWISH HOUSES AND SHOPS WERE INDELIBLY MARKED WITH SWASTIKAS THE PREVIOUS NIGHT AND ONLY JEWISH PROPERTY WAS DAMAGED, IT WAS STATED.

EIGHTEEN PERSONS ARRESTED DURING THE DISTURBANCES WERE ALL RELEASED ON GROUNDS OF LACK OF EVIDENCE. SOME OF THE ARRESTED WERE GERMANS AND HUNGARIANS WHO SPOKE NO RUMANIAN.

SEVENTY JEWISH BUILDINGS WERE DESTROYED AND A NUMBER OF JEWISH TRADERS AND SMALL MANUFACTURERS WERE FINANCIALLY RUINED. M. SARATENU, SECRETARY OF THE UNION OF RUMANIAN JEWS, LEFT FOR PANCIU TO INVESTIGATE THE RIOTS.
