American Writers Condemn “ghetto Benches” in Poland

AN AMERICAN WRITERS’ COMMITTEE TO AID THE JEWS OF POLAND TODAY CONDEMNED POLISH PERSECUTION AND “GHETTO BENCHES” AND ANNOUNCED A SERIES OF LITERARY CONTESTS ON THE JEWISH PROBLEM OPEN TO POLISH WRITERS AND STUDENTS. THE 33 SIGNERS OF THE PROTEST INCLUDE VAN WYCK BROOKS, THORNTON WILDER, ARCHIBALD MACLEISH, LEWIS MUMFORD, KYLE CRICHTON, CLIFFORD ODETS, GENEVIEVE TAGGARD AND VARDIS FISCHER.

THE CONTESTS, AIMED AT BRINGING THE ATTENTION OF AMERICANS TO THE POLISH JEWS’ PLIGHT AND ENCOURAGING POLISH LIBERAL AND DEMOCRATIC FORCES, INCLUDE A $100 PRIZE FOR THE BEST SHORT STORY, SKETCH, ARTICLE OR ESSAY ON THE POLISH JEWISH PROBLEM, $50 FOR THE BEST POEM, AND $25 FOR THE BEST SHORT STORY, ARTICLE OR POEM BY A POLISH STUDENT. THE PRIZE WORKS WILL BE TRANSLATED AND PUBLISHED IN THE UNITED STATES.
