Lithuania Permits Refugees to Stay

The authorities today granted temporary right of asylum to a number of Jewish refugees who have illegally entered Lithuania from Germany in the past few days. A family that arrived at Shali, however, was turned over to the German frontier police, the authorities rejecting a plea that it be permitted to cross the country into Latvia.

About 150 Lithuanian Jewish students have been notified by Italian universities that they would not be admitted next term.

The Interior Ministry confirmed the election of M. Betuchovsky, a well-known Jewish leader, as mayor of Shavli, the second largest town in Lithuania.
