The Palestine Government moved today to enforce stricter control of the press in the campaign to end unrest in the Holy Land. The action was contained in an amendment to the press ordinance empowering the High Commissioner to suspend not only newspapers found guilty of violating the emergency regulations but to suspend printing presses or ban their use for printing another newspaper. Effect of the move is to prevent publication of suspended newspapers under another name with a reserve license.

(The Havas News Agency reported that the authorities have decided to arm a number of Arab villages so that they can defend themselves against terrorist attacks.)

Sporadic violence continued, meanwhile, marked by a bombing in the Herzlia quarter of Haifa. The blast caused no casualties but destroyed underground conduits for 19 telephone lines. A Jewish supernumerary, Yehuda Nissenman, 31, died today of wounds inflicted by Arab terrorists on Monday in an ambush near Ness Ziona. He leaves a widow and two children.

The Jewish National Council called a special meeting for June 26. A communique on last night’s session said that President Isaac Ben Zvi had read to the meeting a message from Pinchas Ruttenberg, head of the Palestine Electric Corporation, to the Palestine Jewish community in which he demanded increased inner discipline transcending party lines. He announced that he was going abroad shortly on an important mission for the Palestine Jewish community. A session of the Palestine subcommittee of the Zionist General Council will also be held on the 26th, it was announced.

The Chief Rabbinate protested to the Government on destruction by Arab terrorists of the famous, ancient Ortorah Yeshiva at Tiberias. The Government was asked to rebuild the institution and to take measures against recurrence of the desecration.
