Denunciation of Nazism as a “ghastly disease” and a warning that “it could happen here” if poverty and despair are unchecked were voiced today by Federal Security Administrator Paul V. McNutt in an address before more than 1,000 women attending the seventh annual luncheon of the women’s division of the American Jewish Congress at the Hotel Astor.
The sum of $25,000 was raised by the luncheon to initiate a program to strengthen democracy at home against subversive propaganda and help the Jewish victims of Fascism abroad.
In his address, McNutt paid tribute to the moral courage of the Jewish people and voiced high praise of Louis D. Brandeis, retired Justice of the Supreme Court, for his work in the interests of the nation and the Jewish people.
Plans to send a shipload of clothing to Jews in Nazi Poland were announced by Dr. Stephen S. Wise, president of the American Jewish Congress. Clothing will be sent through the International Red Cross with whom arrangements have been concluded for the admission of this clothing to Nazi Poland. Other speakers included Dr.Wm.Jay Schieffelin, Fannie Hurst, Mrs.Carrie Chapman Catt and Dr. Robert W. Searle-Mrs. Stephen S Wise presided.
