The Nazi occupation forces in Holland have announced creation of an office to investigate “racial Jewish and Dutch Indian problems,” it was reported here today.
In making the announcement, Goedewaagen, secretary-general of the Department of Arts and Education, denounced the “many Netherlanders” who were “apparently perturbed” at the elimination of Jews from Dutch cultural life and who “thought it necessary to protest against these measures.” Goedewaagen said these persons “seem especially solicitous in behalf of the Jews and not in behalf of the Netherlanders.”
The Goteborgs Posten reports that a Dutch Jew was interned in a concentration camp for “allowing himself to be elected” president of a middle school parental club in The Hague. The club itself was not penalized.
The Deutsche Zeitung fuer die Niederlanden, Nazi organ in Holland, reminds its readers that German Commissioner Arthur Seyss-Inquart has declared that the Jews are not part of the Dutch people, but its enemies. “To elect a Jew to office, therefore, is considered an action against the occupation authorities,” the paper states. It asserts that a Jew should be satisfied if his possessions are not confiscated and warns Netherlanders that they must “bear the consequences” if they mingle with Jews in the future.
