There are still 2,000 refugees in Marseilles holding American, Cuban and Mexican vises, Dr. James Bernstein, European director of the Hias-Ice Emigration Association, declared today upon his arrival from Lisbon aboard a Portuguese steamer.
The fate of these 2,000 refugees, Dr. Bernstein said, depends on whether permission is granted for two Portuguese liners to make one more trip each from Lisbon to the American continent. Such permission has already been given to two Portuguese steamers that will carry 1,000 refugees now in Lisbon and Spain, Refugees are still being smuggled from Paris into unoccupied Marseilles, but if they are caught, they are sent to labor camps, Dr. Bernstein stated. He termed the condition of the refugees in Europe as “not enviable.”
Eli Dijour, secretary of the Hias-Ica, also arrived on the same steamer. The Finer brought 255 Jewish refugees from Casablanca after debarking more than 200 refugees at Havana.
