More than 1,500 Jewish refugees from Bizerte are now living in four school buildings of the Jewish community of Tunis and are being maintained by funds sent by the Joint Distribution Committee to its local representative in Algiers, it was learned here today. The JDC announced that an emergency grant of 250,000 france has been made for this purpose.
Fred K. Hoehler, chief of the Lehman office in North Africa, reports that the J.D.C. representative in Algiers is assisting the Office of Foreign Relief and Rehabilitation Operations in aiding the refugees in the Algerian area. He cited a case when the OFRRO was confronted with the problem of locating housing accommodations and feeding facilities for liberated refugees. “The local representative of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, Mr. Gozlan, kindly agreed to permit these men to sleep in the trade school which his committee had in operation until a teaching staff was mobilized,” Mr. Hechler reported. “Mr. Gezlan also arranged restaurant accommodations for these men.”
