Jewish circles here are concerned over the possibility that “changes” in the Russe-Finnish situation may result in the Jews in Finland being out off from all avenues of escape in event of an open German occupation of that country. Although the Swedish Government is still pursuing the policy of admitting all legitimate refugees who seek to enter, it is probable that if the Nazis assume full control of Finland they will close the Finnish-Swedish border.
The Helsinid newspaper Suomen Socialidemokratti this week carried an editorial strongly condemning the German measures against the Jews of Hungary. “We only hope that this disgrace will not meet our continent ineffaceably,” the newspaper said, “but that in Hungary, Britain and Germany there will be people who will take action to wipe out this disgrace of our century.”
Another Helsinki newspaper, the Sveska Pressen, commenting on the Palestine White Paper immigration ban, states that “the most tragic fact is that the doers of Palestine are closed at a time when 800,000 Hungarian Jews are starting their “via dolorosa” to “a country from which no traveller returns,” to “an inferno of which Dante never dreamed.”
